Los Angeles Pierce College Impact of English on Individual Cultures Paper

Articulation

Length Requirement
: 1000-1500 words (4-6 pages).

Question asked of your thesis: Does being forced to rigorously adhere to an academic/formal standard in English classes silence those for whom academic language is not preferred, or, is learning to write a formal composition paper merely like learning an English dialect? Or both?

For this assignment, watch educator Jamila Lyiscott’s Ted Talks: https://www.ted.com/talks/jamila_lyiscott_3_ways_to_speak_english#t-253495 (Links to an external site.) and Why English Class is Silencing Students of Color | Jamila Lyiscott | TEDxTheBenjaminSchool (Links to an external site.)Why English Class is Silencing Students of Color | Jamila Lyiscott | TEDxTheBenjaminSchoolchoose at least one of the Lysicott talks to reference in your paper and find at least two additional sources that evaluate the use of academic English in any setting (as relates to your position). Incorporate those three sources into your essay as you argue for or against the continued emphasis placed on academic English in higher learning.

Because this assignment asks you to think critically about language and its history, you will find yourself glad that language does generate controversy. Make use of that and remember that your job is to take a position and prove why it is the correct one. Consider Lysicott’s position that academic and/or formal English erases students’ individual cultures and ignores the mastery of language that every student already has and answer the question of the prompt based on your experience and critical thinking (while maintaining the formal third-person perspective).

Remember that this is an argument, not an exploratory or informative essay. The basic rule is that your audience is at least as familiar with any text and with history as you are: never summarize. Critical thought means moving beyond the obvious. Be sure you are directly addressing the question of the prompt. This is the work. A workable thesis must be debatable, researchable, and of some general relevance.

It will be useful to review the sections offered by the Purdue OWL that pertain to planning and composing an essay. Not every word will be relevant for this particular analytic paper, but the strategies offered will prove valuable.

The purpose of this paper is for you to demonstrate your ability to comprehend the material, gathering information and ideas, and using those to formulate ideas of your own. Critical thinking and analysis is about the ability to see beyond the surface of things, this paper asks that you deduce something about the way language is handled in academia and then describe the basis of your deduction by discussion of Lysicott’s philosophy as presented and carefully selecting passages that support, or perhaps disagree with, your insights. Your deduction, that is, your opinion, is the THESIS STATEMENT.

Structurally, your paper should have an introductory paragraph that concludes with a thesis statement – the assertion of the point of your paper. The body of the paper should consist of a close, careful discussion of passages from Lyiscott that you briefly quote or paraphrase and then analyze to show how they support, or even disagree with, your assertion. The concluding paragraph should bring together all the points made in the body of the paper and offer a reassertion of the thesis statement.

Be sure to cite all sources (including Lyiscott) properly using in-text citations and Works Cited page according to MLA Guidelines. Papers should be double-spaced, have a meaningful title, and otherwise follow MLA formatting guidelines.

In your essay:
1. Make a clear thesis statement.

2. Use a clear plan of organization. In your essay, go beyond the five-paragraph essay format, and include the following:
An attention-grabbing introduction that includes a brief explanation of the discussion with your thesis statement.
Support for your thesis including as many supporting paragraphs as necessary while still keeping within the length requirement of the paper.
An address of the most reasonable and educated counterargument to your thesis.
A strong conclusion.
3. Format
your paper and cite your sources according to MLA style guidelines (Links to an external site.).
Refer also to Hacker “Research and Documentation” (Links to an external site.) for examples of MLA essay format and guidelines for documenting sources in MLA style. As I grade this essay, I will hold you accountable for all the instruction available from this go-to source. This three-minute video on how to use quotations in writing essays (Links to an external site.)offers a helpful review of some of the material in Hacker. Remember to answer the question directly and completely, to provide clear reasoning, and to provide specific evidence to support your claims.

PAPER REQUIREMENTS AT A GLANCE

Double-space the document and use one inch margins all around as well as a reasonably sized and designed font in black only. Do not justify margins. (Follow MLA formatting guidelines.)
Include your name on the first page and include a worthwhile and original title.
Introduce your topic clearly in the opening paragraph and offer a clear, argumentative thesis at the end of your opening paragraph.
Be sure to include at least one selection from the talks listed above in your discussion and to formally introduce the text(s) as well as at least two additional sources.
Include proper MLA citations when necessary.
The final submission should be approximately 1,000 to 1,500 words (or 4-6 standard pages).

Submit your essay as an editable Microsoft Word or compatible document (no cut-and-paste, pdfs, .pages, etc)

Week 6 Discussion

“CRISPR, Human Gene Editing, and Esvelt’s Regret”

This week you are exploring how emerging DNA technologies impact our society. For your primary post, respond to one of the following three topics and be sure to answer each of the questions. Also, please reply to at least one fellow student on any topic.

Topic 1 : Jennifer Doudna on CRISPR. View the NBC News story about CRISPR (1)*, including an interview with its co-discoverer, Jennifer Doudna. Then, address the following questions:

  • (a) What applications of CRISPR look particularly promising for improving human well-being?
  • (b) What sort of ethical issues have arisen or are likely to arise with the deployment of CRISPR?

Topic 2 [Reading]: Societal Aspects of Human Gene Editing. Read the article by Neuhaus (2)* and/or the article by Ossola (3)*, then address the following:

  • (a) What do you think our procedures, regulations, and laws ought to be regarding human genome editing, with CRISPR (or any other tool)?
  • (b) Explain your rationale.

Topic 3 [Reading]: Esvelt’s Regret. In the article by Zimmer (4)*, Kevin Esvelt says that he made a huge mistake by championing the application of a technology that he now says is far too dangerous to actually deploy. Based on the article, address the following:

  • (a) What is the technology that he championed? What does it consist of and why does he think it’s too risky to use outside the lab?
  • (b) In your opinion, what sorts of laws and regulations, if any, should society put into place to regulate the technology that Esvelt regrets championing?

Your Rating:

Topic 1 : Jennifer Doudna on CRISPR.

(a) What applications of CRISPR look particularly promising for improving human well-being?

As the video explains that CRISPR is way to edit DNA or they explained surgery for the cell by snipping away the bad. CRISPR is a way to fix what was thought to be unfixable by controlling human evolution. It a way to treat all kinds of diseases. Some examples in the video were treat high cholesterol, heart attacks, muscular dystrophy, and even malaria free mosquitos.

(b) What sort of ethical issues have arisen or are likely to arise with the deployment of CRISPR?

Some are worried about how CRISPR will be used. You can genetically modify a person. Like explained in the video you hand pick your baby. It’s like looking at a menu and deciding what traits you want your embryo to have. By doing this it would be passed down through generations ultimately changing evolution.

Answer Discussion Board Response

Respond to the following question below .

  • Why is needs assessment information critical to the development and delivery of an effective HRD program?

The needs assessment phase of the HRD process model establishes the foundation of the HRD training program (Werner, 2018, p. 141). It is considered a process by which needs are identified and articulated (Werner, 2018, p. 121). Without a road map to get you from Place A to Place B, you would get lost, the same is true for the needs assessment phase of the HRD model, without it there would be no “map” showing what is to be accomplished from the training program. One of the most; if not the most, critical task in the training process is the needs assessment phase (Sleezer, 1993, p. 248). This step affects the trainees, the organization, the quality of the training program, as well as the effectiveness of the training program (Sleezer, 1993, p. 249). The needs assessment phase uses strategic, task, and person levels to identify where and in what conditions training is needed, what needs to be done to effectively perform, who needs training and in what form should the training be presented (Werner, 2018, p. 123). The needs assessment phase also considers that resources available to use for training are limited for many organizations and that training should be prioritized to have the greatest impact on the organization (Werner, 2018, p. 144). Providing this road map for training helps identify what KSAOs should be included, as well as helps encourage buy-in from supervisors, managers, and employees especially if they are included in the assessment process (Werner, 2018, p. 140).

  • Why are behavioral objectives and lesson plans important to effective HRD interventions? What role should objectives play in the design, implementation, and evaluation of HRD programs? How can objectives be of values to trainees?

Objectives should be established as the next steps in the HRD model after needs assessments have been evaluated. Objectives are defined as a “description of a performance you want learners to be able to exhibit before you consider them competent,” per Robert Mager (Werner, 2018, p. 158). Therefore training program objectives describe the intent and desired results of the HRD program (Werner, 2018, p. 158). Establishing objectives also helps form the basis for determining the methods that will be used to achieve the desired outcomes the organization seeks from the training program. Objectives are used to not only form the basis for determining methods but are also used to select the content of the program and to evaluate the program’s success. Clear set objectives can also help trainees focus their attention and efforts during the program, by providing guidance on what and where the program is going along with how to know when they have reached their training goals (Werner, 2018, p. 159). Without clearly defined objectives in the design phase, both learning and evaluation will be less likely to succeed. In order for objectives to be effective, they must link with outcomes, like reaction, learning, application, impact, and return on investment, but also have three critical aspects (Werner, 2018, p. 159). Objectives should be able to describe the performance trainees should be able to do, the conditions under which they must perform these objectives, and finally how well this has been accomplished. Sometimes just simply stated objectives are enough to change employee behavior without addition training interventions. Also clearly defined objectives can represent the organization’s expectations, which have an overall effect on employee behavior (Werner, 2018, p. 160). In summary, objectives help support not only the training program but also those undergoing training by giving them a set of expectations for success.

Read case study and answer three questions in short essay (Only accepted when you can finish in 10 hrs)

Boris was a physician on the staff of a city hospital. He was an at-will employee. He was a recent immigrant from an East European country that had a healthcare system that was years behind that of the U.S. in terms of technology and equipment. Consequently, equipment that was deemed to be obsolete in Boris’s hospital was often considered to be nearly state-of-the-art in his homeland. A number of such pieces of lab equipment were targeted for disposal by his department at the hospital. Without seeking permission, Boris rented a truck and with the help of a friend, took the equipment from the hospital’s rear loading dock and, easily finding a buyer, shipped the equipment off to a healthcare facility in his homeland. When the hospital learned what Boris had done, he was fired. The hospital also called the police and filed a criminal complaint. However, when the local DA studied the police report, she determined that the equipment had been abandoned by the hospital and therefore no crime had been committed.

In 500 words, please describe how would you address the situation described Hypothetical Scenario #15, page 39, 9th Ed. Please answer all three (3) questions:

1. Does Boris have a claim for wrongful discharge?

2. Would your assessment change if the hospital’s employee handbook stated that employees would be fired only for “good cause”?

3. Would your assessment change if Boris had done this before with advance permission, and he assumed he had standing permission to continue to do so?

Portfolio analysis?

The purpose of this Portfolio Project is to allow you to evaluate the prevailing theories in portfolio and investment management. Using the syllabus and topics covered in the course, as well as readings assigned, select your topic and prepare a 7- to 10-page (double spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) paper that addresses the following areas:

  1. Detailed Summary. Provide a detailed summary to demonstrate an understanding of the theories being researched. Use the textbook, as well as other credible, professional sources to enhance and express your knowledge on the subject area (2-4 pages).
  2. Literature Review. Use the University library to review professional publications and locate articles that relate to your topic. These articles should be published in journals that are utilized by financial planning professionals. Do not cite sources such as Wikipedia, Investopedia or general websites in your review of the literature. The CSU-Global library is a good place to do research.

Only professional sources (i.e., journals from the library) should be used. Please consult with your instructor or the CSU-Global librarian if you are unsure what qualifies as a professional source. You should include 5-7 articles and within your review compare, contrast and synthesize the points presented within the articles to reach a conclusion on how professionals feel on the issue being researched (2-4 pages). Use an APA format for the literature reviews including an abstract for each source.

  3. Case Study. Using the theories of behavioral finance, modern portfolio, and efficient markets, create a basic case study to illustrate how/if these theories are relevant in contemporary financial planning investment decision (2-4 pages).

Include both a title and references page (not counted in the 7- to 10-page length).

Your paper may be longer than 10 pages if necessary to illustrate points intended and must be in a Word document. Calculations are not required for this assignment. If you wish to include calculations to illustrate your points, include them in a table within your paper and be sure to submit only one document to be graded in response to this assignment. Your references and your paper must be formatted in accordance with CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. Examine the Portfolio Project grading rubric for this assignment, found in the Module 8 folder, to see how you will be graded.
