Disparities in Health Care Across Race and Ethnicity (title of work #1)
Our society values equality as a right for all of our citizens. Yet, the reality is that disparities exist, especially in health care. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (2010) defines health disparity as “a particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage.” Health disparities adversely affect specific groups or populations who systematically experience obstacles to health care based on several factors or variables.
For example, members of disadvantaged populations are known to have poorer health outcomes as compared to more advantaged populations. Lack of health insurance, poor neighborhoods without quality institutions, lack of access to health care services, and inadequate health literacy contribute to the disparity. Social workers can play an instrumental role in closing these gaps through advocacy, education, policy making, and program development aimed at minority groups.

Hello, everyone, this topic is one that interests me since I live in a rural area. Rural communities face different problems when considering health care delivery and health care disparities. For example, there is a transportation issue with many people living miles away from health care facilities or providers. In a county near me, they do not have a pediatrician, and many have to travel hours to see specialists. If a patient requires multiple treatments, they often lack funds for traveling or may become exhausted due to the traveling. Social workers can continue to work to improve all of these probl ems regardless of where they happen. Health Care Delivery and Health Care Disparities
Disparities in health care access for racial and ethnic minorities and other underserved populations in the United States are well documented. Most often attempts to explain disparities in access to health care faced by these vulnerable populations focus on individual-level factors such as sociodemographics. In addition, health care delivery system in the United States is “disease centered.” An individual who is ill seeks out the advice and expertise of a physician. In turn, the physician diagnoses the condition and offers a standard treatment to cure it. Over time, there has been a desire to make medicine more “patient centered,” with the focus of treatment involving attention not only on the disease, but also on the person with the disease. In either case, the focus remains on the individual. Public health offers yet another perspective for addressing illness and promoting positive health outcomes. Through education, health promotion, and disease prevention, public health takes a “population-centered” approach to improve health and well-being.
Medical social workers are especially well equipped to help health care groups implement more universal approaches. Practicing medical social workers require knowledge and skills to help them recognize and address health disparities and health inequalities related to access to care and provision of health services.

Discussion: Evidence-Based Interventions Used in National Traumatic Events
The DSM-5 task force added a section dedicated to trauma and stress. With an increased exposure to traumatic events, more individuals are exhibiting symptoms related to trauma exposure. Experiencing any of these events can result in an individual’s suffering from a trauma or stressor-related disorder.
For this Discussion, read the DSM-5 section on trauma and stressor-related disorders, in particular the articles on PTSD by Van der Kolk (2005) and Agaibi and Wilson (2005). Then search the literature for a study related to a national traumatic event and an evidence-based intervention used to treat those suffering from trauma and stressor-related issues associated with it.
