Research Methods, Developmental Theories, and Epigenetics

Week 1 OUT OF CLASS Assignment

HDFS 101

TOPIC: Research Methods, Developmental Theories, and Epigenetics

20 points

NOTE: OOCs are done in exchange for us not meeting for class on Fridays.  OOCs also allow you to prepare for class the following week.  Plan on spending about 2 hours on each OOC assignment.

It is recommended, but not required, that you have already read Chapter 1 in your text before attempting this assignment.  You may want to get all of the videos ready, then open the Week 1 OOC quiz, and take the quiz while watching the following videos and reading the posted articles.  All the questions come directly out of the videos and articles (not the textbook).

***Please note that D2L recommends that you copy and paste external links into a new browser, rather than just clicking on the links below.

Also, if English is not your first language, on most online videos you can find the transcript of the video to help with your comprehension.

1)   Go to the following video briefly describing different types of research: case studies, naturalistic observation, surveys, interviews and experiments.

2) Then watch this short Ted Talk about correlation does not equal causation:

3) Then watch the following videos on some of the major developmental theories we will be covering in this course:

Watch this 4 minute YouTube video briefly describing Erikson’s theory:

Watch the video on Piaget created by MSU’s SmartyCats tutors:

Watch this video to learn more about Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory:

Watch this short video on LAUNCHPAD in Chapter 1 under “Videos and Activities” called: “Observational Learning of Aggression: Bandura’s Bobo Doll Study”.  You can also find this video on YouTube:

4) Watch this short video on Epigenetics:

5) Read the “Twin Article” posted beneath this assignment on D2L.

6) Then go to the “Quizzes” tab on the toolbar of our D2L site.  Click on the “Week 1 OOC Quiz” and complete this 14 question quiz by the deadline (Wednesday by 10:00am).  You will have 120 minutes to complete the quiz.  You may want to start the quiz while you are watching the videos, as the questions come directly from these videos.  Please note that the questions come from a large test bank and will be randomized, so that every student’s exam will be different.

7) Complete Learning Curves 1a and 1b in LAUNCHPAD by Wednesday, 10:00am. 3 points each (6 points total for completing these 2 Learning Curves).  You can find a link to all the Learning Curves (LCs) in the “Learning Curve Assignments” folder in the bottom of this OOC Assignments folder.
