SOWK7230 Tulane University Black Lives Matter Social Movement Paper

5 pages will do! Please read the directions and the attachment. Use the headlines in the attached outline within the paper.

What social movement inspires you? This assignment will provide a great opportunity to explore, in more detail, a social movement that is important to you or the clients you serve.

First, complete this session’s readings and review the other course resources, particularly the readings from Session 3 on Social Movement theories.

Next, choose a current social justice/social change movement in which you have a personal or professional stake. Please note that a social movement is a group of cohesive social actions to serve a particular end goal. Examples of the types of issues that can be good to focus on include: Occupy Wall Street, Advocacy for Transgender Bathrooms for Youth in North Carolina, Advocacy against E-verify, and others. Please do not cover all of the actions for a particular identify group. For example, the Women’s Movement is too broad, but you could research #MeToo or the Equal Rights Amendment. Choosing a discrete bookended movement is an important success factor for this assignment. You must apply social theory to the analysis of this movement (this can include the ones we have discussed in class but many others, as well).

Important: This essay—along with the final project and project milestones—is a major assignment in the course and will require considerable external research, so please start looking for peer reviewed articles and scholarly books early.

Next, submit an academic essay (5–7 pages) in APA format that addresses the following critical elements related to the background, current state, and future direction of the social movement you have selected:

Background of Social Movement

  • Key Issues: Describe the key issue (or issues) addressed by the movement.
  • Historical Overview: Provide a brief historical overview of the development of the movement, including the tactics (successful or not) used by the movement in the past.

Social Movement at Present

  • Current State: Describe the current state of the movement, including any recent or current tactics.
  • Assessment Based on Theory: Use at least one of the theories from the course readings to frame the issue/s addressed by the movement
  • Influence: How has this movement influenced other social movements?
  • Challenges and Opportunities: Provide an assessment of the challenges and opportunities presented by the movement’s tactical choices.

Future Directions of Social Movement

  • Tactics/New Directions:
  • Propose at least one new direction (or tactic) for the movement.
  • Use at least one of the theories from the readings to frame the new direction/s or tactic/s.

This assignment is due at 11:59 p.m. CST the evening before our next live session.
