Paradigm Shift is a change that occurs that breaks the mold, in other words, a change that challenges previous conceptions and common practices. Unexpected successes or failures, one of Drucker’s 7 Sources of Innovation, can produce a paradigm shift. For instance, Marriott, before it became a chain of hotels, was a very popular restaurant, located just a few minutes outside an airport. The management realized that their clients were mostly passengers looking to grab a meal before or after a flight. This was before airlines provided in-flight catering. Marriott saw this opportunity and partnered with an airline, creating the concept of in-flight dining. They took their unexpected success to another level and broke the common conception (no food on flights) to create an innovative business opportunity (in-flight dining).
