identify issues, process data from an applied perspective, and increase their exposure to a variety of health conditions.

Professionals in the field of vocational rehabilitation work in a variety of settings.  The core commonality of all settings for professionals in the field of vocational rehabilitation is working with individuals with disabilities.  Research consistently indicates that medical and psychosocial aspects of disability is a core competency required by professionals working with individuals with disabilities (Chan, Leahy, Saunders, Tarvydas, Ferrin, & Lee, 2003; Ethridge, Rodgers, & Fabian, 2007; Leahy, Chan, & Saunders, 2003; Leahy, Muenzen, Saunders, & Strauser, 2009).  The Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) identifies Medical, Functional, and Environmental Aspects of Disability as a major knowledge domain for rehabilitation counselors in training (CORE, 2012).

An often daunting task for vocational rehabilitation professionals is building their applied knowledge of the medical,

functional, and environmental aspects of disabilities with limited opportunities for actual exposure to the variety of health

conditions experienced by individuals with disabilities (Falvo, 2014).  A case-approach method encourages a deeper level

of learning and allows the learner to move from theory to application (Krieshok & Pelsma, 2002).  The following case

studies allow learners to identify issues, process data from an applied perspective, and increase their exposure to a variety of

health conditions.
