The course concluded this week with a review of the role of data in crime prevention. Beyond the “Ring of Steel” application, data and technology will continue to transform crime prevention and law enforcement.
- Should law enforcement agencies be allowed to track parolees or probationers using GPS and GIS? Why or why not?
- How can mapping and GIS technology be used to best ensure the safety of the community? Keep in mind that any procedures or strategies must be constitutional.
- How sophisticated has crime mapping become in the U.S.? Is it a benefit to society or an unnecessary danger to allow ordinary residents to have access to mapping data such as crime maps or sex offender locations?
- Why is there a reluctance of the private sector and utilities to share GIS and other data with police and law enforcement agencies?
