Culturally Effective Disaster Responses

2-3 pages

Effective crisis intervention requires an awareness and appreciation of the culture(s) in which survivors exist. This is especially true in the broad context of a natural disaster. When a natural disaster impacts a large area, social and cultural infrastructures (such as schools, places of worship, hospitals, and neighborhoods) may be destroyed, making it difficult for survivors to recover and local crisis workers to intervene. In response to natural disasters of such magnitude, crisis workers from nearby regions must familiarize themselves with local and cultural conventions prior to intervening.

For this Assignment, you will analyze cultural considerations related to the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Then, you will evaluate the cultural effectiveness of the response efforts in each.

CROSS-FERTILIZATION

Present and discuss an example of cross-fertilization  between two or more art forms. For example, you might compare a theater  presentation with a film adapation of the same play, or discover and  describe how a poem can be illustrated as a drawing or painting.

For this discussion, you might also compare art forms  between two different cultures.  For example, you might compare how  religious images or music differ between religious or cultural groups.

Be sure to include images and links so everyone can see or hear what you’re discussing, and make sure to use one  interpretative tool from the semester to say something about the things  you are comparing. Make sure refer to the Learning Resource for the  tool and which week it is from either in your narrative or as a  citation.
